The 200th Anniversary of
The Star Spangled Banner
with a performance of
From Sea to Shining Sea
Question: What do The Star Spangled Banner and
the Jordan's organ and multi-media concert event
From Sea to Shining Sea have in common?
Answer: They both tell a story of life in these United States of America
The Star Spangled Banner Story: As dawn broke on September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key gazed through the haze at Fort McHenry. For 24 hours, the British navy had bombarded the fort. He could finally see the stars and stripes, a 30' by 42' garrison flag that had been created by Mary Pickersgill, an experienced Baltimore City flagmaker, and was inspired to write the poem that was later to become the national anthem.
Key's words were first printed on September 20, 1814 in the Baltimore Patriot and Advertiser under the title "Defence of For M'Henry." The poem was set to a popular American and British melody, "To Anacreon in Heaven" by John Stafford Smith, and was rapidly circulated. The first sheet-music issue of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was printed by Thomas Carr's Music store in Baltimore in 1814.
The flag and the song - which would later become the National Anethem - came to symbolize the nation and remain important national symbols in the United States and the rest of the world.
During the 19th century, “The Star-Spangled Banner” became one of the nation’s best-loved patriotic songs, performed during both public events and more personal gatherings. Dudley Buck, well-known composer of the 19th century joined hundreds of others in composing his own variations on the famous tune and helped establish the organ in American musical life.
The From Sea to Shining Sea Story: Dudley Buck's Concert Variations on The Star Spangled Banner with its Romantic flourishes and counterpoint, creates a resounding conclusion to the story we tell in From Sea to Shining Sea -- the fascinating story of how the organ developed in America -- from its roots in Europe to becoming the premiere social instrument in America.
From Sea to Shining Sea features a program of some of the most-beloved American concert organ works and a narration that encompasses how American history interacted with the development of the organ.
From Sea to Shining Sea also features a live video feed so every audience member can see how Dr. Jeannine Jordan coordinates feet, hands, and body to produce music filled with color and imagination.
